Does softened water taste salty like sea water?

No. Ion-exchange water softeners add monovalent sodium ions (Na+), not table salt (NaCl). Salty taste requires chloride ions (Cl-). Because zero chloride is added during softening, the water retains a fresh, smooth taste.

Is softened water safe for people with high blood pressure?

For healthy adults and individuals with mild hypertension, drinking two litres of softened water contributes 12% to 18% of the standard daily intake, remaining well within healthy guidelines. However, patients on medically supervised strict low-sodium diets (<1,000 mg/day) must consume water purified via reverse osmosis.

Can I prepare infant baby formula with softened water?

No. Infants under six months have immature kidneys that cannot process supplemental mineral concentrations. Baby formula must always be reconstituted using pure, low-sodium water from a reverse osmosis unit or certified bottled water.

Why must softened water never be used for garden irrigation?

Sodium ions disperse soil clay particles (deflocculation), destroying soil porosity and creating an impermeable crust. This induces osmotic drought, preventing roots from absorbing moisture and essential nutrients (calcium and potassium), which kills Mediterranean flora.

Does a kitchen reverse osmosis system remove sodium added by the softener?

Yes. A direct-flow reverse osmosis membrane strips 95% to 99% of dissolved sodium, delivering ultra-pure drinking water with less than 5 mg/L of sodium.
