Filter comparison

Which whole-house water filter do you need?

Different filtration technologies solve different water problems. Compare sediment, activated carbon and ultrafiltration systems to understand which treatment stage is suitable for your home in Cyprus.

Comparison
PP Sediment Filter Mechanical pre-filtration
Activated Carbon Chemical & odour reduction
Ultrafiltration (UF) Fine membrane filtration
Main purpose Remove suspended mechanical particles before they enter the plumbing or other treatment equipment. Improve water quality by reducing chlorine, unpleasant taste and odour. Create a much finer physical barrier against suspended particles, turbidity and microorganisms.
Best for Sand Rust Silt Tank sediment Chlorine Taste Odour Some organics Bacteria Fine particles Turbidity Colloids
Sand & rust Yes Not its primary purpose Yes
Fine turbidity Depends on micron rating Limited Very effective
Chlorine No Yes No
Taste & odour No Yes Not normally
Bacteria No reliable barrier No reliable barrier Physical barrier
Hardness / limescale No No No
Dissolved salts / TDS No No No
Filtration level Depends on the cartridge, commonly available from coarse to fine micron ratings. Adsorption rather than membrane filtration; performance depends on carbon type, quantity and contact time. Membrane filtration at a fraction of a micron, significantly finer than standard sediment cartridges.
Typical application First filtration stage for municipal, tank or well water containing visible particles. Whole-house treatment where chlorine smell, taste or chemical residuals are the main concern. Homes using storage tanks or where improved protection from fine contamination and microorganisms is required.
Maintenance Replace the cartridge when loaded with sediment or when pressure drop increases. Carbon media or cartridge must be replaced when its treatment capacity is exhausted. Requires periodic flushing or backwashing; membrane cleaning and eventual replacement depend on the system.
Choose it when... You see sand, rust or sediment in tanks, filters, taps or plumbing. Your main complaint is chlorine smell, taste or general water comfort. You need a higher level of filtration, particularly for tank water, turbidity or microbiological risk.

Purpose
Reduce chlorine and improve the sensory quality of water.
Removes
Chlorine, unpleasant taste, odour and some organic compounds.
Chlorine
Yes
Bacteria
No reliable barrier
Limescale
No
Best use
When chlorine smell, taste or overall water comfort is the main problem.

Ultrafiltration (UF)

Fine membrane filtration
Purpose
Create a fine physical barrier against suspended contamination.
Removes
Fine particles, turbidity, colloids and microorganisms including bacteria.
Chlorine
No
Bacteria
Physical barrier
Limescale
No
Best use
Tank water, turbidity and situations where a higher level of microbiological protection is required.

One filter does not have to do everything

Whole-house systems are often built from several treatment stages. For example, sediment filtration can protect downstream equipment, activated carbon can reduce chlorine, and ultrafiltration can provide an additional barrier against fine particles and microorganisms. The exact configuration should be selected according to the water source, storage tank condition and water analysis.
